Obituary for CHARLES S. BURKS

On Wednesday, December 22, 2021, Charles Sims Burks stepped into paradise and met his savior Jesus Christ. Charles was born December 23, 1948 in Corsicana to parents C. L. and Bettie Mae (Johnston) Burks.
Charles grew up in Houston attending M.B. Smiley High School (class of 67) and then Navarro Jr. College (67-68) where he was the only male cheerleader, which he loved! Charles had failing health beginning in 2016, recovering from a near fatal viral infection. He suffered from dementia, diabetes and heart disease. In October he contracted Covid. It ravaged his immune system and he succumbed to pneumonia ten weeks later.
He worked in Houston District 12 TXDOT as an assistant to the district engineer in the road maintenance division for 32 years. He interacted with many people (mayors, governors, attorneys, local law enforcement, business owners and other citizens.) His co-workers could tell you he loved fried chicken!!
After retirement he and his wife of 32 years, Sherry, moved to Fairfield to fish for crappie, blue cat and freshwater redfish in the area lakes. He loved hunting, once shooting a non-typical 32-point and a 23-point white tail near Del Rio, TX.
Charles was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Fairfield where he was an assistant Sunday School teacher to the Gideon Men’s Class. He loved that group of men. He loved Jesus!
His favorite Bible verse was Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else but Jesus. For there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”
Charles was a witty, funny man. When together he loved to tease and joke with his grandkids. He kept them laughing, there was never a dull moment. He wasn’t a perfect person, no one is. He would tell you “I am a sinner, saved by grace.”
Charles is survived by his wife Sherry, a son, Chad (Kelli); step-son, Mark Hodges; grandkids, Nathan (Lindsey) Owen, Jaedyn and Larame; great-grandkids, Aubrey, Harper and Scarlett; a sister, Ann McClendon and nieces Kelly and Vickie of New Mexico; mother-in-law, Jean Walker of Houston; sisters-in-law, Vivian Walker of Spring; Jean Ann Flores of Houston; brother-in-law, Craig Walker of Galveston; special dear friends, Bobbie (Frog) and Gail Bridges and family; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In lieu of flowers please consider a love offering of any amount to BMA Missionaries to Israel “Gods Chosen People” through Calvary Baptist Church – Fairfield, TX 903-389-2613
