Obituary for Purvis Black
His Lord said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant…enter into the joy of your Lord” Matthew 25:23
Purvis Boyd Black went to be with his beloved Savior on Sunday, March 3, 2019. Purvis was 94 wonderful years old.
Purvis was born to Richard Lafitte Black and Ida Irene Boyd Black on November 19, 1924 in the Lanely community in Freestone County, Texas. He attended school in Dew and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married his beautiful bride, Velma Louise Vaughn, On April 14, 1946. Purvis lived in Freestone County for most of his lifetime and was a Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church of Fairfield.
Purvis, or “Nig” as he was called by many, was known for his ability to grow an amazing garden, and for enjoying a good game of 42 dominoes. He always had a twinkle in his eye, and was quick to chuckle with his witty sense of humor. He made the best pot of chili you ever tasted, and he had a special candy he liked to serve at Christmas time. He had a true servant’s heart, and he wanted everyone to know and love Christ the same way he did. He was a man of great honor and respect. But what Purvis was most known for was how much he loved and adored his family. And what a big, loving, beautiful family he had!
Purvis leaves us his legacy of love through Louise, his beloved wife of nearly 73 years; daughter, Vicki Becker and husband Paul of Charleston, SC; son, Barry Black and wife Debbie of Franklin, TX; daughter Janet Sustaire and husband David; son Steve Black and wife Teresa; and daughter Susie Lane and husband Dennis, all of Fairfield; Twelve grandchildren, Chris Becker, Lori Becker Hamill, Richie Black, Toni Black Chanley, Kerri Black Cleere, Greg Sustaire, Anna Sustaire Stone, Brandon Black, Haylie Black Riggs, Ashlie Black, Adrian Lane Little and Dustin Lane. 31 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. All the ‘grands’ sure loved their Papa, and they all knew how much he loved them.
Purvis is also survived by his sister, Mary Scott; his brother, Kenneth Black; a sister-in-law, Odell Albritton and many nieces and nephews.
We know for certain that Purvis is enjoying a heavenly reunion with his parents, his daughter Cheryl, and his brothers, Dovard, Jim and Johnny and sister Ruth.
This is not goodbye; it’s only “We’ll see you later.”
